Charleston, South Carolina

In August, we went to South Carolina for our summer vacation. I had wanted to take the kids to Hilton Head since Nate and I visited there several years ago. We started the vacation with a several hour delay out of Salt Lake, caught a movie in Chicago while we waited for our new connection, and finally arrived in South Carolina about 1:30 am. The next morning came early, but we had tickets to a few things that we didn't want to miss, so we got going. First, we took a ferry out to Ft. Sumter. It was VERY cool! Nate and Megan got to participate in the flag raising ceremony there. From there we took a carriage ride through historic Charleston. The city is beautiful and we loved the ride, even in the rain. Our last stop was to Magnolia Plantation. It was once a working plantation that now has beautiful gardens you can tour. We also toured the slave houses on the property. I almost didn't include them in the post because they make me so sick to my stomach. Before I ever went to the south, I was dying to see the sprawling plantations and mansions there. When I actually went there I realized that, first of all, there aren't many left, and second, any romanticized ideas I had of them were misguided. So while it is beautiful there and I'm sure all the mansions were impressive, they aren't anything to be proud of. We loved Charleston though and I would like to go back there sometime.
